Introduction

430 stainless steel is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade, combining good corrosion resistance and formability characteristics with useful mechanical properties. Its ability to resist nitric acid attack permits its use in specific chemical applications but automotive trim and appliance components represent its largest fields of application.

These properties for 430 are specified for the flat rolled products (plate, sheet, and coil) in ASTM A240/A240M. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as forgings and bars in their respective specifications. Properties of Grade 430F are specified for bars in ASTM A582.

430 Stainless Steel Properties

Corrosion Resistance: 430 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments. It can withstand exposure to water, mild acids, and other corrosive substances without corroding or rusting.

Strength: 430 stainless steel has moderate strength, making it ideal for applications that require moderate mechanical strength. It has a minimum tensile strength of 450 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa.

Ductility: 430 stainless steel has good ductility, which means that it can be easily formed and shaped without cracking or breaking. This property makes it ideal for applications that require complex shapes or designs.

Weldability: 430 stainless steel is easily weldable, making it an excellent choice for applications that require welding. It can be welded using common welding techniques, such as TIG, MIG, and resistance welding.

Magnetic Properties: 430 stainless steel is magnetic, which makes it suitable for applications that require magnetic properties.

Heat Resistance: 430 stainless steel has good heat resistance and can withstand moderately high temperatures without losing its strength or corrosion resistance. It can withstand temperatures up to 815°C (1500°F) without undergoing any significant change in its properties.
