440c Stainless Steel Supply

Grade 440C stainless steel is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel. It has high strength, moderate corrosion resistance, and good hardness and wear resistance. Grade 440C is capable of attaining, after heat treatment, the highest strength, hardness and wear resistance of all the stainless alloys. Its very high carbon content is responsible for these characteristics, which make 440C particularly suited to such applications as ball bearings and valve parts.

440C Stainless Steel Properties

Corrosion Resistance: 440C stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments. It can withstand exposure to water, mild acids, and other corrosive substances without corroding or rusting.

Strength: 440C stainless steel has high strength and hardness, making it ideal for applications that require high mechanical strength and resistance to wear. It has a minimum tensile strength of 760 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa.

Ductility: 440C stainless steel has low ductility, which means that it cannot be formed or shaped easily. This property makes it suitable for applications that require high hardness and resistance to wear.

Weldability: 440C stainless steel is difficult to weld due to its high carbon content. It is not recommended for welding, and if welding is required, a low-heat input method such as TIG welding should be used.

Magnetic Properties: 440C stainless steel is magnetic, which makes it suitable for applications that require magnetic properties.

Heat Resistance: 440C stainless steel has good heat resistance and can withstand high temperatures without losing its strength or corrosion resistance. It can withstand temperatures up to 315°C (600°F) without undergoing any significant change in its properties.

440c Stainless Steel Applications

440C stainless steel is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel known for its high hardness, wear resistance, and good corrosion resistance. It is often used in applications where high performance and hardness are essential. Here are some common applications of 440C stainless steel:

  1. Ball Bearings: 440C stainless steel is frequently used in the manufacturing of ball bearings and bearing races due to its high hardness and wear resistance, which contribute to longer bearing life.
  2. Cutlery and Knife Blades: The high hardness and excellent edge retention make 440C stainless steel a popular choice for knife blades and other cutting tools. It is valued in the cutlery industry for its ability to maintain a sharp edge.
  3. Valve Components: Components of valves and valve seats in certain industrial applications may be made from 440C stainless steel due to its corrosion resistance and wear resistance.
  4. Medical Instruments: Some medical instruments, particularly those requiring sharp edges, such as surgical scalpels and dental tools, can be made from 440C stainless steel.
  5. Aerospace Components: 440C may be used in certain aerospace applications where high strength and corrosion resistance are required, such as components in aircraft bearings.
  6. Injection Molding Components: Due to its wear resistance, 440C stainless steel is used in injection molding applications for producing plastic components, especially when abrasive materials are involved.
  7. High-End Hand Tools: Some high-end hand tools, such as certain types of screwdrivers, punches, and chisels, may be made from 440C stainless steel to ensure durability and wear resistance.
  8. Textile Industry: Components in textile machinery, such as blades and cutting tools, may be made from 440C stainless steel for its hardness and wear resistance.
  9. Industrial Blades: 440C stainless steel is used in the manufacturing of industrial blades, including those used in cutting paper, plastics, and other materials.
  10. Sporting Goods: Components in certain sporting goods, such as knives, fishing knives, and some types of scissors, can be made from 440C stainless steel for its sharpness and corrosion resistance.
